This fella looks like he may be moulting . . . I think he's a Purple Finch judging by the habitat maps. These birds winter in your area! :D I am looking in my biggest bird book - it has not-so-great pictures but good info on habitat and almost too MANY birds! (For example shows birds that live *only* in Mexico!) "Birds of North America" in assoc with the Smithsonian - 930 species, Fred. J Alsop

I usually check Petersen's first because their depictions of birds are so accurate and very descriptive of juveniles which many books overlook. This bird COULD be a House Finch, they live in your area (and most of the continental USA) year round but I am going by the redness on his belly, seems like he'll be a lot redder that my guys (Purple finches don't come here :-{)

P.S. re your rescued dove: it looks like an Inca dove but it's way out of it's habitat if so. Could it be a young mourning dove? (That's the only dove that even comes close and in your area) I started birding years ago, my mom was a bird nut. Whe I became disabled the disease set in, now I am hooked for life! :)

P.S. These are GREAT shots - you will see if you start bird book shopping how many baaaad bird photos are in them, I was amazed at how awful the Audobon Society's book is, altho' I bought for the info! If you have a photo software program with a "sharpen" feature (such as Photo Impression) you could make the not-so-clear ones look clear! I use it!

PPS never mind, I looked at the females again, and I am pretty sure these are Purple Finches because the tail notches are so deep. House finches have shallower notches! Have I confused you yet? I should stop and think before I write! ???:-O
