COMPASSION
The scriptures describe Jesus response to the needs of others by repeatedly using the phrase “moved with compassion”. The Greek word for compassion is ELEEO. It means “ to show kindness or assistance.” Far greater than simply feeling a depth of pity or sympathy, it is a divine force expressed in a deep yearning over the suffering of another, not just others that share the same ideologies or views as us, but for all people. We could call it “projected love,” which is the real meaning of AGAPE - God’s divine love. This love doesn’t pick out groups or people to love or hate, it is projected towards all people.
Godly compassion springs from the deepest part of our beings. The scriptures refers to “bowels of compassion” (1 John 3:17) speaking of our spirits, or our “inner man” When Paul expressed his love for the Philippians he declared: For God is my record how greatly I long after you in all the bowels of Jesus Christ” (phill 1:8)
All these pictures place the source of compassion on a deeper plane than a fleeting, momentary feeling of pity or sympathy for another. They refer to the spirit of believers from which the compassion of the Holy Spirit flows freely.
Compassion is the loving outreach of God to persons who need his touch, this extends past religious , race or political boundaries. When His agape love touches a person, it sets that person free. Bitterness, past hurts, offenses, emotional scars, physical problems, mental bondages and relational difficulties are healed when the divine force of His compassion touches a life.
Sadly, many people project a loving attitude towards others with a ulterior motive of gaining their favor. The new age movement projects a loving face, tolerating most everyone’s beliefs and opinions while hating others for their beliefs. This counterfeit compassion originates in the mind and is exercised as a form of mind control. Unfortunately, it is found not only in the secular world but is practiced by some Christians in ministry to gain advantage over people.
True compassion is birthed in our spirits by the Holy Spirit, there is transforming power in the compassion that comes from God, working through a believer.
