THIS MAY BE BOSS's LAST STAND
From what I can glean from my horse books, Boss is suffering from **prolonged systemic shock** causing rapid heartbeat, high temps, and dehydration.
Thank you Mr. Veterinarian.
He is in danger of his liver and kidneys shutting down (he is already barely urinating).
Did the vet TELL us this? No.
Am I SURE this is what is wrong? No.
But the vital signs and facts fit the books.
We could not get a vet out today. A vet IS coming tomorrow.
I would never have known it - he is reasonably alert, is eating and drinking, but when I went through the checklist, it all fit.
Please say a prayer or spare a good thought for my Boss -
- that whatever happens, he goes with honor and dignity.
Ed and Derrick are as devastated as me.
Copenhagen (and therefore Dakota) are standing RIGHT by Boss's new pen.
Per two of the books, Ed mixed up an electrolyte solution (Pedialyte for horses) in apple juice - and he DRANK it - a whole gallon! Followed by 5 quarts of fresh water (as the books say he should).
Now we have to come up with money to keep that up - he'll need gallons of it.
He may need to go to a vet hospital which means mega bucks.
What that vet did NOT do: - Properly examine and treat the wound the first day. - Have us take his vitals the next day when he went down. - Come out for a checkup the first week and check him for shock. - Told us a hell of a lot sooner what danger Boss was in and WHY. - Plan for a tetanus booster shot (second one) next week.
If Boss goes, then the insurance company is sure to pursue this to the end . . . (yes he is insured).
