This will be the last old picture for awhile. I post it because it came with a story. His name is Daniel Smith, he was my grandmother's great uncle. His father was my great-great-grandfather (Maybe should be another great in there?) Anyway at the age of 18 he enlisted as a private in the civil war. A member of Company D of the 110th Illinois Volunteers. He was at the following battles of the war. Perryville, Chickamagua, Mission Ridge, and Lookout Mountain. He also was with Gen. Sherman on his march through Georgia. When he got old he would have his niece play Marching Through Georgia on the organ while he marched around the room. His father John R. Smith weighed 300 lbs. When Daniel enlisted he weighed only 76 lbs. He settled in Wayne City, just east of Mt. Veron Illinois and worked as a farmer and lived until he was 76 years old. The things you can find on the internet. |
